WCB Release Workplace Injury Report For 2017

Workplace injuries continue to be an issue for Nova Scotians.

The Workplace Compensation Board of Nova Scotia’s Report shows there were almost 4,400 time-loss injuries from January to September last year.

The 2016 report shows the numbers are almost identical for the same time.

CEO Stuart MacLean says he wishes there were zero injuries in the work-place, but is happy the numbers haven’t gone up.

He says they’re seeing an improvement across most industries but nursing homes, home care and residential construction has seen a spike in injuries.

“Typically it’s about safe list and transfers, so it’s moving patients. That’s the biggest thing that comes on the health care side,” he says.

“Also that’s followed by slips and falls and also violence claims.”

MacLean says those are the types of things they need to be strategic about to create a safe work environment.

He says the worker also has a role to play in safety.

“And there’s only doing something if we can do it safely – it’s just a permission to basically look after yourself,” he says.

“And that’s what we really need people to do, is to go home safely to their families at the end of the day.”

MacLean also says parents should talk to their kids on safety tips when entering the work-force.

The WCB has released their full report.
