What To Plant

It’s that time of year. Each spring I tend to start wandering around my back yard, wondering what I could grow. There are some things I like to grow each year. There are some I have not tried, but would still like to give them a go.

I will admit I’m not a very good gardener. I don’t spend enough time weeding and caring for the plants. I just want them to grow on their own. I don’t mind planting them. I don’t mind harvesting and eating what they produce. I just don’t want to spend a lot of time on them between those activities.

Which does not make me a very good gardener.

I usually put in a few tomato plants. Actually, I tend to put in too many tomato plants. I like certain types for cooking, certain types for eating and the yellow ones are nice for a change. Thankfully, a lot of places have started doing single plant transplants rather than trays of a half dozen of each type. That has helped me get lots of variety and avoid having a ton of tomatoes waiting to be picked in the fall.

I have also liked the idea of trying to grow my own garlic. I know many people plant it in the fall, but as usual, I forgot. And you can plant it in the spring if you get at it fairly quickly.

And maybe a bit of basil. I like basil.

Now maybe you can see where my list is headed. When you break it down, it seems I really want to grow spaghetti sauce.

If only I could plant empty jars and just go out in the fall and harvest full ones. Too bad it doesn’t work that way.
