With The Legalization Of Cannabis Expected Next Year, Injury Free Nova Scotia Wants To Get The Discussion Rolling

Injury Free Nova Scotia, a non-profit provincial organization supports legalization, but are against commercialization of the drug.

They held a stakeholders session with the Yarmouth County Community Health Board earlier this week to ask for feedback on how Nova Scotia should approach the impending legislation.

Injury Free NS Executive Director Shirley Ann Burdock says their goal always is to reduce serious injuries and injury-related deaths in Nova Scotia.

“That we’re encouraging, strongly encouraging our government to a regulatory framework in place that can help manage the harms that are going to be associated with cannibis consumption in this province.”

The province has launched an online survey asking if the age of 19 should be the legal age of purchase and use, if the sale of cannabis should be through a crown corporation like the NSLC, where recreational cannabis can be used and about drug-impaired driving.

Burdock says they want to keep creating awareness, because this legislation isn’t on everyone’s radar yet.

She says future public consultation sessions are planned.
