People around Lunenburg county are remembering World War Two veteran Ralph Hebb.
He passed away Saturday at age 97.
Hebb arrived in Normandy five days after D-Day, serving on active duty in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
Honourary Colonel for 14 Construction Engineering Squadron, Dan Hennessey, says he’ll remember Hebb for his storytelling.
“His abilities to tell stories was historical. He could capture an entire room when he started to regail some of his stories.”
Hebb also spent time as a custodian at Hebbville Academy and helped build the Hebb’s Cross Fire Department hall.
Hebb received a ‘Thank You Medal’ from the Netherlands government in 2010 and the French Republic’s Legion of Honor in 2014 for his role in the Battle of Normandy.
Hennessey says Hebb was a proud but humble man.
“Ralph was very quick to say that he wasn’t a hero. He always said his comrades that were left behind, they were the heroes.”
A funeral service is Thursday in Conquerall Mills. Further details can be found here.
