World Wildlife Day

Today is World Wildlife Day, recognized every March 3rd around the globe. It was proclaimed by the United Nations to celebrate wild animals and plants, and to highlight the importance of protecting them for future generations. The date itself marks the anniversary of the signing of CITES in 1973. That’s the international agreement that regulates the global trade of wildlife and wildlife products to help ensure species aren’t pushed toward extinction because of over-harvesting or illegal trafficking. Here in Canada, it’s a pretty big deal. We’re home to some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, from Atlantic coastal waters filled with marine life, to the vast boreal forest, which is one of the largest intact forest ecosystems in the world. Canada is also home to iconic species like moose, polar bears, Atlantic puffins, and countless migratory birds that rely on protected habitats. World Wildlife Day isn’t just about celebrating animals, it’s also about recognizing how biodiversity supports everything from food systems to clean air and water. Healthy ecosystems directly support communities, jobs, and even climate stability. So it’s a good reminder today that conservation isn’t just about far-off jungles or savannas, it’s happening right here at home, too.
