Yarmouth’s Allie Munroe To Represent Canada At Nations Cup In Germany

Yarmouth’s Allie Munroe will represent her country overseas.

The third year defenceman with Syracuse University is one of 21 players to make Team Canada’s National Women’s Development Team.

The team will travel to the Nations Cup in Füssen, Germany from January 3-6.

The 20 year old found out she had been selected late in November.

Munroe says it was surreal.

“They gave me a call, and I didn’t know what to expect. When they told me I was going to be on the team, my heart kind of stopped for a second. I was really excited and I couldn’t wait to tell my parents. It was really awesome.”

Player selections were led by Melody Davidson, who is Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s teams programs and Gina Kingsbury, director of national women’s team programs.

Kingsbury won Olympic gold as a player with Canada in 2006 and 2010, and Davidson was the Head Coach of those teams.

Munroe says it’s unbelievable to be selected by such high profile people in the sport.

“It’s really special to see what they have to say about you, and that they want you on the team and want you competing. They’ve been there before, so you can learn so much from them and they have so much knowledge to give you. It’s incredible that they see talent in you.”

Munroe grew up playing in the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association.

She was the captain of Team Nova Scotia at the Canada Winter Games in 2015, and has previously taken part in camps with Team Canada’s development team.

At Syracuse, Munroe was named CHA Best Defenceman last season and received All-Conference First Team honours.

Munroe says her ultimate goal is to play for Canada at the Olympics, and she is one step closer to that goal.

Canada will play a pre-tournament game against Austria on December 30th.

They open the tournament against Finland on January 3rd, and then they’ll play Russia the following day.

Canada has won gold 11 times at the tournament.
