You can have a FREE Volvo! If you swim to the bottom of the Bedford Basin

I’d heard about this when I was a kid, but always thought it was a bit of an urban legend.

Apparently not!

I’ve heard a couple different versions of this story, and both are pretty wild.

One says it happened in the late ’80s, when a container ship arrived in Halifax Harbour with a load of Volvos but didn’t have the proper paperwork — so the cars had to be dumped.

The other version is that there was a Volvo assembly plant in Halifax, and some damaged or unsellable cars were dumped into the harbour with permission… which honestly does sounds about right for that time!

Either way, the story is that a bunch of Volvos ended up on the bottom of the Bedford Basin.

Even though some of the fine details are hazy, CBC did do a story a few years back on a company that was exploring the bottom of the harbour!

Any scuba divers want to go have a look? I’m not sure there would be much left of them now, but it’s still kind of interesting!
