$15 Minimum Wage Would Hurt NS, Not Help: Taxpayers Federation

A proposed $15 minimum wage in Nova Scotia is being met with opposition from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

NDP Leader Gary Burrill believes the raise would benefit the entire economy and health of the province.

It would see the wage go from $10.70 to $11.70 in 2017, $13.35 in 2018, and $15 in 2019.

Atlantic Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Kevin Lacey, says our economy can only handle so much of an increase.

“And if you raise the minimum wage to a level the NDP are talking about it’s going to kill jobs in the province and hurt places like South Shore, Nova Scotia.”

Lacey says it would also push younger Nova Scotians out of the province instead of keeping them here.

He says the province could raise the basic personal tax exemption, eliminating some workers off the tax roll.

The NDP motion was rejected by Premier Stephen McNeil.
