Bridgewater Science Team To Represent Nova Scotia Internationally

Some of the brightest science minds in Bridgewater schools are set to pit their skills against the world.

The South Shore Robotics team from Bridgewater Junior High School and Park View Education Centre will be representing Nova Scotia at the 18th Annual International Marine Advanced Technology Education ROV Competition in Tennessee June 20 – 22.

The seven member team designed and built an underwater remote operated vehicle.

Team member Adam Culbert says there’s lots of real world uses for ROVs.

“Whether that’s working on oil out in the Atlantic, or other stuff like that. There’s lots of applications in the real world of building these things. A lot more professional grade, but this is definitely a stepping stone to what could be a real profession.”

Team member Adam Culbert says there’s more to the competition than just winning.

“Just being down there and the conversations you have with other people, and really the exposure that you get down there, to me that’s the prize. Just getting down there and talking to people that know exactly the challenges you had.”

But the team may not make it to Tennessee without some help.

The South Shore Robotics teams is hoping to raise $10,000 through a GoFundMe page to cover team members travel costs.

Culbert says it’s important all members make the trip.

“It’s going to be expensive. We would like to get all of our teammates down there to be able to witness us competing,” says Culbert. “This is an amazing thing we do here and this could not happen without everybody’s work. No one person could do this. It is a whole team effort to build this one amazing ROV.”
