Bridgewater Women’s Shelter Gets Kitchen Makeover From Local Business

A little generosity is landing Harbour House a new kitchen makeover.

Harbour House, a shelter and crisis centre for women and children, was nominated by the community as the winner of a new stone kitchen counter from Stonewrights Crafted Stone Surfaces.

The original giveaway was much smaller than the project at Harbour House, said Stonewrights co-owner Martina Groeger, but as she learned about what they do and what they needed, she knew they were the right choice.

“When we talked to the manager there, she said this is the place where the women and children gather,” said Groeger.

“This is where talk, laugh and cry, and there is a lot happening in this space. So we looked at the kitchen and decided okay, were going to do it.”

The original countertop was functional yet dated and in need of a refresh. Given the community outpour of support for the shelter, and knowing how hard staff work to keep it together, Groeger was eager to help.

“I know the manager I’m dealing with, she puts her heart and soul into this house,” she said.

“Of course, you know with old houses, there’s always something to do. This is something they would never be able to afford on their own, and it just makes me feel so great for them.”

Phase one of the project is already completed, with phase two slated to wrap up this week.

But Groeger said she doesn’t think the generosity should stop at the counter and put out a call to local businesses to consider donating services or materials to help update Harbour House.

“Its not my place to say what should be done,” said Groeger, “But I feel like a new kitchen floor would really tie it all together.
