Future Of Chester Food Bank Still Unclear

The food bank in Chester continues to live under the shadow of an eviction notice.

Chair Wendy Shepphard was hoping to find out if they’ll have to move out by May.

But, council still isn’t ready to give a definitive answer.

Shepphard says the delay will have huge consequences.

“If we don’t have a place to go, and we can’t stay where we are, there’s no sense in bringing in more groceries,” she says. “So, we may have to cancel our grocery orders from now on.

She says she’ll meet with her board as soon as possible to decide if they can keep bringing in food.

Meanwhile, Warden Allen Webber says the food bank has had plenty of time to come up with a new plan.

“They have had a year to deal with this problem, based on the assumption that they had to move,” he says. “I know it isn’t easy and I know they don’t want to.”

Webber says the municipality has provided the food bank with a rent free space for more than two decades.

They have also offered up to $20,000 to help offset the cost of moving.

A final decision is expected by the end of March.
