Whatever the emergency, the fire service is prepared to respond.
Two deer are thankful for that after they fell through ice in the LaHave River Thursday morning.
Nine members of the Riverport and District Fire Department were involved in the call.
Chief Craig Cook says it was a good opportunity for ice rescue training.
“Most of the time when firefighters do their ice rescue training it’s a lot of ice and generally people don’t fall through safe ice. When they do fall through, it’s usually a little more difficult than what our training would be.”
But, he adds it can also be challenging for firefighters.
“The cooperation of the animal is definitely one of the big factors,” says Cook.
“A deer is quite a powerful animal and it wouldn’t take much to hurt somebody.”
One deer was rescued from the ice and eventually released into the woods while the other escaped on its own.
A happy ending for both firefighters and the animals.
