Eliminating Distracted Driving Among Top RCMP Priorities

The RCMP in Nova Scotia have identified their priorities for this year.

Staff Sergeant Derek Smith with Queens RCMP says province-wide goals include a 3% reduction in serious or fatal motor vehicle crashes.

He says their major focus is eliminating distracted driving.

“The current studies show distracted driving is now eclipsing impaired driving as the leading cause of collisions, both minor and serious or fatal collisions.”

RCMP also want to reduce person and property crimes by 2% across Nova Scotia and enhance connections with aboriginal communities.

He says they can deliver programs, provide online training and conduct checks on offenders to try and achieve those targets.

Smith says speeding, ATVs traveling on roads and the move of court services from Liverpool to Bridgewater were identified as local concerns during two town hall meetings this week in Queens County.
