Chester’s world champion skip, Mary Fay is home with a gold medal in hand.
Fay skipped Team Canada to the gold medal at the World Junior Curling Championship after beating the United States 7-4..
The 17-year old arrived in Chester Monday night and says aside from some fatigue she’s feeling pretty good about bringing home the gold.
“It’s pretty surreal right now. To bring that gold medal home for our country. To know that we’ve won a world championship. It means the world to us. To know that all our hard work has paid off. It’s a great feeling,” said Fay.
Fay says she’s overwhelmed with emotion after winning the province’s first gold medal at the world juniors.
“I’m so happy that we’re able to bring it home for Nova Scotia and our community. It’s pretty amazing to know that just because you’re from a small town doesn’t mean you can’t achieve great things at a world level,” said Fay.
Fay says she’ll spend the March Break catching up on school work missed while away in Denmark.
But there’s little rest for the weary.
“Since we won the world’s we actually have a spot in a grand slam at the end of April. That’s a great opportunity getting to compete against teams like Rachel Homan and Jennifer Jones. So our season isn’t over yet. It’s crazy.”
