People Learn How To Help Syrian Families Pick Up English

Syrian families in Lunenburg County now have more help picking up the language.

The New Voice Language Academy is offering English as a second language workshops to refugee supporters.

Co-owner, Alden Darville, says he’s pleased with the amount of interest.

He says more than 40 people signed up to take the class.

“Some of them went away thinking ‘wow, this is really really informative,’” he says. “I think some of them went away thinking ‘this is going to take a lot.’”

Darville says communication is the toughest challenge facing most Syrian families.

“If they’re able to speak to their neighbour,” he says, “if they’re able to speak to their grocer, if they’re able to speak to their banker, realistically, this makes them feel more welcome.”

The course was modeled after a similar class in Halifax.

He hopes to offer another class in the near future.
