More Help For Newcomers To Learn English

New Canadians on the South Shore now have better access to English training.

A contract to provide full-time lessons to newcomers has been awarded to New Voice Language Academy in Lunenburg.

Program Coordinator, Erin Murley says until now they’ve only been able to offer part-time courses.

“Students were getting approximately three hours a week of English training,” she says. “But now with the influx of newcomers that we’ve had we really wanted to get them to progress at a faster rate.”

Murley says the new funding will allow them to provide 12 hours each week without any cost to the student.

She says they’re excited to get started.

“We have the instructors, we have the program in place. It’s offering our rural newcomers the same opportunities the could get in the city.”

The new class schedule will begin on Monday.
