Chester Man Combating Bee Population Decline

A Chester business owner is raising awareness about what’s happening to the bee population in Nova Scotia.

David Adams, Owner of Beeyond the Veil Beekeeper Training, is hosting a talk about the real problems facing all pollinators.

He says pesticides are a big problem.

However he says they’re also facing disease and malnutrition.

“All of these things a healthy bee colony could cope with singularly,” he says, “but, as a group it’s enough to weaken a colony so that it actually weakens and dies.”

He says he’s spoken with the new Minister of Agriculture who’s committed to speaking with the highway commission.

“To encourage them to leave the road verges to grow longer. To let them flower and produce these green corridors where bees and other pollinators can travel.”

Adams says there’s a lot individuals can do to help including planting flowers or letting some areas to grow wild without removing the weeds.

The talk is scheduled for April 18th.
