MODL Mayor Thinks Provincial Budget Is A Mixed Bag

Funding for rural high-speed internet announced during Tuesday’s budget was welcome news for the Municipality of Lunenburg.

Mayor Don Downe says something needs to be done and it’s good to see the province stepping up.

“It’s a huge problem,” he says. “The fact that they’ve added $6-million to it is a step in the right direction.”

He says the investment is in line with the municipalities strategic priorities.

“Whenever this budget is approved we’ll be knocking on the door of the business department, sitting on the door step saying ‘we need money now.’”

The budget wasn’t all good news.

Downe says they’re still looking for more help from the province in dealing with abandoned schools in the area.

He says they ‘re costing municipalities huge amounts and of money.

He adds should be a provincial responsibility and they’ll continue to bring attention to the issue until something is done.
