A new community group wants to take over the former Gold River school.
The property was set to become new office space for the municipality.
However, those plans were abandoned and a request for proposals went out.
Heather Brooker is leading the group interested in re-purposing the school.
She has started a petition and is gaining lots of support.
“The petition right now has 400 signatures and counting.”
She wants to see it become a community hub like the Mahone Bay Centre.
“I think working with Mahone Bay and understanding what their trials and tribulations are and learning from their lessons, I think that we can probably do the same down here.”
Brooker hopes to have a proposal ready to present by the deadline.
Meanwhile, Warden Allen Webber says he’d love to have a community centre but the process has already been set into motion.
“We would be open to that under the right circumstances. And the biggest one I think for us would be what exactly do they intend to do with it and how do they intend to manage it from an economic point of view?”
“The petition and her request for a public meeting has come, unfortunately, after the fact that we’ve already done the call for proposals,” he says. “So we have to be fair to everybody in this case.”
The deadline for proposals is June 3rd.
