Laser Scan To Project Flood Plains In Lunenburg County

It sounds like something from a sci-fi movie.

A plane will be taking a laser scan of Lunenburg county.

The process is called Lidar Imaging.

Jeff Merrill, Director of Planning, says it will help them avoid dangerous situations.

“We had some deaths a number of years ago now,” he says, “where a section of the Lahave River was flooded. So this will allow us to map where the flood plains are and allow us to plan for that.”

Merrill says this is a big step up from information that’s available now.

“We’re going fro basic–areas where we don’t currently have Lidar in–we’re going from five meters resolution to 15 cm resolution. So, much more detailed.”

Merrill says the information will help with land use and environmental planning.

The total cost of the project is $117,000 plus HST.

The plane is expected to fly sometime in the next week.
