A Digby County boat-building company just completed Halifax Transit’s latest ferry.
The ‘Viola Desmond’ was built at A.F. Theriault and Sons in Meteghan River, and sailed to Halifax recently.
The name was chosen through an online contest in the Halifax Regional Municipality, recognizing the Nova Scotian civil rights activist.
It’s the last of three ferries the company built for Halifax Transit over the past two years.
Each vessel is worth about $5-million.

Graham Oakley, Manager of New Construction at A.F. Theriault says a lot of pride went into building the ferries.
“They noted the vessels are going to be used daily by Nova Scotians as well as tourists coming to the province and the city.”
The ‘Viola Desmond’ will sail into service on July 7.
The other vessels that A.F. Theriault built, the ‘Craig Blake’ and ‘Christopher Stannex’ are now in service.
