Parent Concern Turns To Relief After HMCS Acadia Barracks Evacuated

A Bridgewater parent admits he was concerned after several fire departments were called to HMCS Acadia in Cornwallis late Sunday night.

Cadets are undergoing training and several complained they were feeling sick in the barracks.

Three buildings were evacuated due to a possible propane leak.

David Mitchell’s 14 year-old son, Caleb, is attending.

He says he and his wife, Trina, were deeply concerned after a report indicated the incident involved mass casualities.

“As anyone would assume casualities meant fatalities. We, of course, were terribly concerned something tragic had happened.”

However, Mitchell says his son texted a short time later.

“It basically said that ‘we’re okay, we’re in the dining hall’ and that was all we got for a little while then we got another text saying ‘they were going back into the barracks.”

There were no injuries.

He says his son is in good spirits and looks forward to the training.
