Nova Scotia’s chief public health officer is trying to limit concerns about a herbicide that will be applied in forests around the province.
Glyphosate is used to control a wide variety of weeds, trees and brush.
Enivironment Minister Margaret Miller has given the green light for it to be used in some 1,300 hectares of forest in Halifax and Colchester counties.
The move has been met with an online petition calling for the minister to reverse the decision.
Dr. Robert Strang says glyphosate poses no risk to human health if used properly.
Strang says people would have to be exposed to a certain amount and in a certain way to be at risk.
He adds, it is not the case with its application in Nova Scotia.
A recent New Brunswick study confirmed that the product did not pose a risk in forestry applications with appropriate safeguards.
