Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a ban on single use plastics.
The ban will include items such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates, and stir sticks.
The federal government estimates Canadians throw away $11 billion worth of plastic materials each year.
Trudeau says the ban will introduce a circular system that puts more responsibility on producers for recycling.
“Moving forward on a national level will oblige manufacturers to think differently about what products they use.”
Trudeau says the plan will not only reduce pollution but will add jobs by creating new waste management businesses.
The ban is to come into effect by 2021.
