It was a banner year for lobster fisherman in Nova Scotia.
Around 55-million pounds of lobster was caught in LFA 34 this season.
And with lobster fetching between $6.00 and $6.50 a pound for most of the season, that’s good news.
Fisheries Minister Keith Colwell credits co-operation between industry and government for managing the lobster stocks and getting the product to market.
“Usually when the harvest goes up, [and] the market isn’t there, the price goes down. So we’ve identified that. So we’ve done our part towards getting the higher price for the boats and for the whole industry.”
Colwell says the government invested $1.5 million to promote Nova Scotia seafood here and abroad.
He says that is a worthwhile investment and will continue paying off in the future.
“I give them a lot of credit for the hard work they’ve done and dedication they’ve put in place – a very dangerous occupation going lobster fishing.”
