A Rough Road To Lunenburg For Halifax Couple

After becoming regular visitors to the town, Jennifer Sinclair and Chris Brodka decided to make the move to Lunenburg.

Last February, they contacted Lunenburg’s Development Manager Dawn Sutherland, about moving Sinclair’s dog grooming business from Halifax into their new home.

In an e-mail, Sutherland told them they could operate a dog grooming business out of their home.

This winter, after putting their home up for sale and making an offer on a home in Lunenburg, Sinclair contacted Sutherland again to get her business up and running.

She was told that dog grooming is not considered a personal service and would not be permitted as a home-based business.

Sinclair was told it could cost up to a thousand dollars to apply to have the bylaw changed.

“Where we have it in writing that we were told we were allowed to do this, I think it would be as easy as somebody admitting that a mistake was made. I think it is unnecessary for us to have to go through a bylaw amendment and public hearings.”

Sinclair doesn’t think that’s fair.

“It’s really an unnecessary process to have to go through, not to mention a waste of people’s time and money when we could just stick with the original information that was given over a year ago.”

Sinclair says they based their decision to move around working out of their home and she doesn’t know what she will do for work if this isn’t resolved.
