Annual Curl For A Cause Has Best Year Yet

The 18th annual Curl For A Cause was the biggest one yet.

Over the weekend curlers from across the South Shore hurried hard at the annual bonspiel, raising over $44,000.

The money is going towards the Alternate Level of Care Unit in Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital.

Money was raised by curlers, a chowder supper and auctioned-off items were held over the weekend – including Toronto Maple Leafs tickets.

And it was the first year for the Rhodies Hot Shots Trophy.

Elsa Naussa and Stef Sopher were the first recipients after winning skills competitions.

Alison Clements with the Health Services Foundation Of The South Shore says it’s in memory of Stephen Rhodenizer, who was a large part of Curl For A Cause over the last 18 years.

“There was lots of touching moments, there was lots of excitement, and of course really good curling as well,” she says.

“And the person who was able to give it away was Peter Mosher and he was the one that actually hired Stephen to the Curling Club way back in the day.”

Clements says the ALC Unit gets support through the health care budget, and the foundation, but can be overlooked sometimes because it’s not the E.R. or O.R.

“But it’s absolutely important because there are people who need to go to a nursing home [later in life] but as we know beds aren’t always available there,” she says.

“So it’s a very important transition point in their lives and we want to be able to provide them with the best care possible.”

Clements says the money means they can buy 16 pieces of equipment for the Alternate Level of Care Unit, including beds, ceiling lifts and 12 over-the-bed tables.
