Another Midwife On The Way To The South Shore

South Shore mothers-to-be once again have an alternative to hospital delivery.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority announced the province will be adding two new midwife positions.

One will be based in Bridgewater, the other in Antigonish.

Sally Loring, Senior Director of Maternal & Child Health Services says she’s glad to see the team expanding.

“There’s been lots of discussion as you can imagine. It was felt that it was the appropriate thing to do and we were authorized to do so by the government. So that’s very positive.”

The two South Shore midwives are currently on leave.

The vacancies sparked a protest outside MLA Mark Furey’s office in late January with calls to increase the number of midwives to serve the region.

Loring says they’ve begun the process to hire a third midwife and it’s expected they will start in the spring.
