April 30 Tax Deadline Looming

The April 30 deadline is nearing for people to file their 2018 income tax and benefit returns.

CRA spokesperson Desmond Arsenault says people shouldn’t be panicking but should get their documentation ready with just over a week to go.

“We certainly encourage everybody to file on time to make sure there are no interruptions in benefits that you receive such as the HST Credit, Canada Child Benefit and Old Age Supplement.”

He says there is a five per cent penalty if people owe money and file beyond April 30.

Arsenault says people should be prepared and take advantage of every deduction they can.

“Gather all your information and don’t forget your child care expenses, medical expenses and charitable donations,” says Arsenault.

“Throughout the year, it’s always good to keep all these receipts in one location so you’re not scrambling at the last minute to find them when it comes time to pay your return.”

Moving expenses and RRSPs can also be claimed.

Arsenault says CRA has an app or website that lets people view and pay account balances.

You can also file online for free using one of Canada Revenue Agency’s certified softwares or find a Community Volunteer Income Tax Program clinic if you have a modest income.
