Canada’s only all-Black battalion formed in Nova Scotia will be remembered in a documentary screening.
The Margaret Hennigar Library in Bridgewater will show the film Honour Before Glory about the Black military battalion formed during World War I.
Branch coordinator, Marion Moore says the movie reflects this year’s Black History Month theme at the library.
“It is a significant piece of Nova Scotian history. That’s why the group that picks the theme felt it was time. It is the 100th anniversary,” said Moore.
Moore adds, the story is of particular historical significance that sometimes gets overlooked by Nova Scotians.
“The battalion overcame many obstacles of discrimination.”
“I think as time passes fewer of us have any connection to the first world war and of what Canada’s role was. In this case, most of us had no idea of this particular battalion,” said Moore.
The award-winning documentary will be screened at the library located in the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre on Wednesday, February 17 at 7 p.m.
***Correction: A previous version of this story said the screening was at noon.***
