Big Tancook Island Man Charged Following October Shooting

RCMP have charged a Lunenburg County man with careless use of firearm after a shooting on Big Tancook Island.

Sgt. Bruce Briers says Christopher Stevens faces the single count in the shooting death of 52 year-old Barry Slauenwhite in late October.

Stevens allegedly used a firearm “in a careless manner or without reasonable precaution for the safety of other persons.”

“And in consultation with the Crown, they looked at various different charges that could’ve been laid on this matter. Through the course of the investigation, it was decided that this was the most appropriate charge for this particular situation.”

The two men were reportedly hunting on the island when the incident occurred.

Police say the men knew each other but weren’t together.

Stevens will appear in Bridgewater court on Wednesday.
