Black Loyalist Heritage Society Taking Part In Shelburne Founders Days

Shelburne Founders Days are on this weekend.

The Black Loyalist Heritage Society will be hosting a two day open concept cultural festival tomorrow and Sunday at the centre in Birchtown.

The society’s Vanessa Fells says it’s natural to include black loyalist history in the festival.

“The Black Loyalist history is very much ingrained in Founder’s Day as well because the Black Loyalists arrived at the same time as the Loyalists in Shelburne. Were doing this simultaneously and it should make for a great celebration.”

It will start at noon tomorrow with events including readings, quilt display, spoken word and poetry, children’s activities and interactive sessions.

Sunday will see a memorial church service with music ministry by the Cherry Brook Mass Choir.

Fells says the event will celebrate African Nova Scotian culture, diversity and significant contributions as part of Canada 150 celebrations.

For the kids, face painting, a bouncy castle and a scavenger hunt will be included.
