Brewing Up Some Courage For Gord

The life of Gord Downie will be celebrated in a tasteful way.

Boxing Rock and Garrison brewers are working together to produce a beer in honour of the Tragically Hip frontman.

Justin Zinck with Garrison says references in Downie’s lyrics to wheat made brewing a wheat beer the obvious choice.

“We wanted something approachable. We didn’t want to make, like, a double IPA that only a certain group of people would like. But still that colour will make it unique, just like Gord. It will be something purely Canadian.

Zinck says the beer they’re calling “Courage” had already been in the works, but with Downie’s passing they felt it would be a fitting tribute.

Henry Pedro with Boxing Rock says he has just one regret.

“Unfortunately Gord passed away before we could finish it. We kinda wished that he would have been made aware of it. He’s one of our great heroes, here, at the brewery, and myself, personally.”

The beer label was created by NSCC instructor Erin McGuire using numbers that appear throughout Downie’s lyrics.

Just 2,000 bottles will be produced over the next month.

They’ll be sold at the brewer’s locations in Shelburne and Halifax and at select private liquor retailers.
