The Bridgewater Police Service has 10 members in Moncton today, showing support for the RCMP. Police Chief John Collyer says the officers wanted to be a part of the effort. However, for some members, the incident has brought back painful memories from 1996. Collyer says the events in Moncton hit close to home “For some of my members, it brings back memories, bad memories of when we’ve had a colleague killed here on the South Shore, Derek Burkholder. When something like this happens, it tends to bring back all those memories of the earlier events.” Burkholder was shot and killed while answering a call about a domestic dispute. Collyer says it’s essential to show support to their colleagues and families during this time.
