Bridgewater Writes-Off Hockey Team Debt, Look To League For Payment

Bridgewater is writing off debt from the former owner of the local Junior ‘A’ hockey team.

The former Bridgewater Lumberjacks owe the town $1,950 for ice time and interest.

It dates back to when the team was owned by Ken Petrie and played in the Bridgewater Memorial Arena.

Councillor Andrew Tanner feels it should have been paid back before moving to the LCLC.

“You’re running a business. You open a new business where you have a 50 per cent stake and if you have a customer that owes you money in the old business, you are not going to let them run a line of credit in the new.”

Tanner says the Maritime Hockey League received money after selling the team last November, when the team changed to the South Shore Lumberjacks.

He would like the league to cover the debt.

Town staff are expected to contact the league to discuss the option.
