A petition that garnered thousands of signatures from the Tri-Counties, calling on the province to provide full oral cancer drug coverage, has been tabled in the Nova Scotia Legislature.

The document also asks the government to fund a unit at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital to provide radiation treatment.

The petition was circulated by the Western Nova Scotia Cancer Support Network.

Three MLA’s stood in the House to table the petition…Liberals Zach Churchill of Yarmouth, Gordon Wilson of Clare-Digby and Chris d’Entremont of Argyle-Barrington.

Zach Churchill says he’s been meeting with the province’s chief oncologists who are conducting a review into the sustainability and feasibility of providing radiation treatment in the area.

He says they will give it full consideration and will provide the health authority with some recommendations.

“They’ll be looking to see if patients would prefer Yarmouth as a treatment area, to see if they’re able to staff it long-term and to look at the actual costs of that facility. i think the right people are asking the right questions as we move forward on this important issue.”

Churchill also noted that the government set aside money in the current budget for expanded oral cancer treatment.
