An annual event in North East Point, Cape Sable Island has raised over $11,000.

Proceeds from the ‘Row for Nanny’s Cure’ are for the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund, helping Shelburne County cancer patients and their families.

The event was held this past Saturday, and featured dory racing and an event called ‘Survivor, Cape Island.’

The Row was inspired by two young men involved in dory racing, who won an event after both their grandmothers were diagnosed with cancer in 2009.

Bethany Nickerson’s mother was one of the two grandmothers, and has since passed away.

“To know that we are able to give back in her name and keep her memory alive, and to watch the cancer survivors get in the dory on the day of the row, it really hits home that we are doing something to give back to the community. It’s also a way to encourage them as much as they encourage us with their fight.”

Hundreds lined the causeway as red and yellow wreaths were laid during a silent row, remembering those who have lost their battle and those continuing to fight cancer.

The event has raised about $100,000 in eight years.

Nickerson says fundraising will continue this year.
