Chester Providing Coupons To Residents For Bottled Water

People in Chester experiencing a water shortage are getting help from the municipality.

The District of Chester is handing out coupons for bottled water.

The program, which started today, provides four litres of bottled water per person per day, up to a maximum of 16 litres per household.

Warden Allen Webber says the municipality has approved $10,000 worth of coupons to help people.

“We meet pretty much every Thursday, so we’ll get a report from staff on the usage and determine from there whether or not it’s necessary to increase the funding or if it’s sufficient.”

Webber says at least 60 people have logged complaints that they’re without water, but he knows there are many more.

He says Chester doesn’t have a public water supply.

“Most of our community organizations are on wells themselves. We made contact with a variety of them prior to making this decision. They were concerned that if they started opening up their facilities, they themselves would start running out of water.”

Coupons can be picked up at the municipal office tonight at 151 King Street from 5 to 7 p.m and all week from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m.

They can be redeemed for water at the Chester Foodland, the Chester Independent, the Petro Canada in Chester Basin and the Hubbards Independent.

Webber says they’re also looking at adding the grocery store in New Ross.

He says the very least the municipality could do was make sure residents have clean and safe drinking water.
