Church Group Pushes For Affordable, Respectful Option To Remember Deceased

A new option to remember loved ones at Brookside Cemetery was presented at this week’s Bridgewater Town Council meeting.

Members of Bridgewater United Church would like to see the construction of a scatter garden.

The garden allows ashes to be spread in a dignified way while offering families an affordable alternative to casket or internment in the columbarium.

Mayor David Mitchell says the garden would fit in nicely at Brookside.

“There’s sometimes a water feature, there’s definitely a bench or a place for people to sit, some greenery, flowers. It’s not a very large garden, it’s not a park, but it is a tranquil place for people to reflect.”

Mitchell says the scatter garden would allow families another option to honour people who have passed.

“Loved ones could spread the ashes of the person who’s deceased in a place where they can always go back to and sit on the bench and have that connection with that loved one.”

Mitchell says the town would have to change a by-law to allow the garden.

He says town staff are reaching out to learn how other municipalities handle spreading ashes in a public place.

And that report will be presented to council at a future meeting.
