A conference discussing lyme and tick-borne diseases could be coming to the South Shore this fall.
Yvonne Mosley of Garden Lots represents a group of people that have teamed up with the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation.
She says their goal is to elevate the discussion about the disease in the province.
“We recognize that there is a huge need for more information about Lyme disease for the public to know what they’re dealing with when they go outdoors and for health-care professionals to have the most recent data so they can make informed decisions.”
The conference would help everyone learn more about prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
The South Shore and Tri-Counties are considered high-risk areas of black-legged ticks.
She says Lyme disease can also lead to other factors.
“How tourism may be affected, potential economic impact, the housing market may be another and of course, the health-care system.”
According to Doctors Nova Scotia, there were more than 500 reported cases of Lyme disease in the province in 2017, up from 326 cases in 2016.
Mosley is currently presenting to local towns and municipalities to gauge support before asking for financial help.
