CKBW Celebrates 70 Years On The Air

As people around the South Shore prepare to celebrate Christmas, we here at CKBW are marking a significant milestone as well.

Seventy years ago today, our radio station went live.

The first broadcast was at AM 1000 on December 24, 1947 and serviced the Bridgewater area.

In 1980, we began broadcasting across the South Shore when transmitters were built in Shelburne and Liverpool.

General Manager, Eric Whynot grew up in the area and remembers listening for the most important updates.

“That was the station I turned on when I was waiting to see if school was cancelled,” laughs Whynot. “I can remember as a little kid, the radio would be on in the kitchen and even if I was still in bed in my bedroom, I could over hear it.”

Country 100.7 was launched seven years ago and Whynot says the company is constantly working to better service for listeners

Whynot says it’s an honour to be the station the community turns to when things are happening locally.

“I think it becomes extremely important, especially if there’s a situation where maybe a highway’s shut down or there’s some real breaking news, that we’re the people that the South Shore will turn to to get that immediate news.”

He looks forward to carrying that responsibility forward into the digital age.
