Clare Firefighters Association To Host 2nd Annual Weekend Workshop In April

Many people in the fire service in Canada and the U-S have taken notice of what’s happening in Clare.

Firefighters developed the Clare Firefighters Association Training Passport.

It uses three levels: green, red and yellow, to identify individual skills and place recruits at a fire scene where they will be the most effective.

Red means a firefighter can do any activity on the ground other than fighting fire.

Yellow means they can can do exterior fire attack and green means interior fire attack.

With the colour codes supervisors can keep the scene safe .

Last year the association held its first training weekend with over 300 firefighters attending.

They will hold a second one in April.

The chief of the St. Bernard Fire Department and training committee chairperson Daniel Gaudet, says changes in the nature of fire scenes means training is constantly evolving.

“It’s definitely a different kind of fire than what we were used to 10 or 20 years ago. The fires burn more intense because of combustibles and we have to make sure our (firefighters) know that and we need good leadership to handle those.”

The Weekend Workshop takes place April 14 and 15 at University Sainte Anne in Church Point with two special guest trainers.
