The LaHave River no longer has untreated wastewater flowing into it from the town of Bridgewater.
The system came back online Thursday afternoon after crews from Black and MacDonald made repairs to a pumping station near Kings Street.
Mayor David Mitchell says outside contractors were needed to make repairs because the town did not have the required specialized equipment.
“It goes into a pumping station that’s not a huge building. There’s limited work space in there. You’re talking about untreated wastewater coming from up to a thousand homes.”
Mitchell says the work was deemed to dangerous for the equipment the town had on hand.
“It’s not like a leaky pipe in the basement. You can’t tell the whole west side of the LaHave river, please don’t use any water or flush your toilets. So they’re working in conditions that are volatile.”
Mitchell says the town is constantly working to find funding to replace aging infrastructure.
He says the issue is, maintenance is a cycle and once you finally get through replacing all sections of the system, the work needs to start again at the beginning.
