Community Celebrates Day Of The Midwife

Today marks the Day of the Midwife.

A year ago, many parents and concerned citizens were demonstrating outside their local MLA’s office as the South Shore’s midwifery program had been suspended.

But now the program is running at full capacity.

Danielle Griffin was one of the organizers of last year’s protest and now she’s one of the organizers of a picnic this afternoon meant to celebrate the midwifery program.

“We were optimistic at this point last year but no pregnant people were receiving midwifery care so now we have three full time midwives and people have access to this incredible model of care.”

Griffin says it’s also the ten year anniversary of the program’s introduction in Nova Scotia, and it’s a program the South Shore seems to truly value.

“Women and families and allies in particular have seen what the model of care offers and the more traditional medical model just can’t offer the same services,” she says, citing continuity of care throughout prenatal and postnatal care.

The picnic is today 1 until 3 today at the Desbrisay Museum.

It will feature live music and healthy snacks, however attendees are asked to bring picnic lunches with them as well as eating utensils.
