Community To Discuss Development Proposal For Former Gold River School

The fate of the former Gold River school site is once again up for discussion.

A meeting will be held this week after a proposal was brought forward to build an apartment complex on the site.

The building we be constructed on the back side of the lot, leaving the playground nearer the road intact.

Gina Green with the Together We Can Society says that plan doesn’t align with her group’s goal of maintaining the land as a park.

“We wanted to see the upper field to remain as an open green space for activities, different things that we would want to do with the community.”

Green says the proposed buildings don’t sit well with her group.

“The vision that we had for the property was to utilize the entire space. And we didn’t feel it was a very good fit for an apartment building, whether it be seniors housing, affordable housing, whatever they wanted to incorporate there.”

However, Green says there are likely other opinions on how the site could be used and feels it’s important the entire community has their say.

The meeting will be held 6:30pm this Thursday at Western Shore and Area Improvement Society, 6485 Hwy 3 across from the Post Office.
