District of Lunenburg Hosts Open House on Straight Pipes

People are getting a chance to learn more about straight pipes in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.

An open house will be held August 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m at the MARC in Dayspring.

Project leaders will be in attendance to talk about which properties are covered by the proposed wastewater management district, steps involved to implement the replacement program and costs.

Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says they want to make sure people understand what’s happening.

“This is to clean up the estimated 600 straight pipes in the LaHave River and the policy and everything is being put in place that we want to be straight pipe free by 2023.”

Bolivar-Getson adds, they are striving to have at least five straight pipes replaced by the end of the year.

“And that will test our cost recovery policy, it will give us the opportunity to see how the program is working and then move forward in a much more aggressive manner over the next few years.”

A bylaw and two policies related to straight pipes have passed first reading and will be discussed again by municipal council on August 22.
