Don’t Light Up A Joint In Your Downtown Tomorrow

Just because marihuana becomes legal tomorrow, does it mean you can spark up a doobie on Main Street ?

Smoking cannabis is not included in many municipal anti-smoking bylaws.

Mayor Pam Mood says in Yarmouth, and other communities, provincial legislation does apply to marijuana.

“So right now the town has a smoking bylaw but it doesn’t have much included within it (regarding cannabis). So what we go by is the Smoke Free Places Act so those are the laws that we enforce.”

Meanwhile, Mood spent 18 years with the RCMP’s Drug Section office in Yarmouth.

She says times have changed.

“You just didn’t know what you were getting because people were growing it. we would often send to the lab and it was often mixed with so many things that you can’t even mention, it was crazy. So now at least you know what you’re getting, like alcohol.”

Health Canada has strict requirements and regulations for licence producers.
