Dory Racers Inviting Newcomers To Dip An Oar In The Water

A Lunenburg dory racing group is looking for help to stay afloat.

For 66 years, rowers from the towns of Lunenburg and Gloucester, Massachusetts have competed for bragging rights.

Club member Lisa Tanner says in the past they’ve looked to local businesses to help support their efforts.

But now they’re hoping the community can lend a hand.

“I think people have forgotten about us and we’re in dire straits now because our dories are very old. We have to take bailers out with us all the time so we can get back to the wharf.”

Tanner says they’re trying to encourage new members to join and help shore up their financial situation.

She says it’s great way to exercise.

“Get the people out of the gym for the summer and come down and hit the dory and go out in the harbour. And I think people don’t realize, you don’t have to race in order to be a member.”

Tanner says they also need money for equipment as many of their boats are in disrepair and they need new oars.

The money from the association also goes to offset the cost of traveling to the United States to compete

Tanner says they’ve planned a fundraising run and dance for June.
