Education Minister Curtails Powers Of School Boards

Education Minister Zach Churchill says it was necessary to issue a directive to the seven English school boards, removing much of their authority.

The boards must now seek permission from the department before entering agreements or making major changes, including decisions on transportation, finance, operations and staffing.

The boards also cannot initiate any new school reviews.

Churchill says it will help ensure a smooth transition to the new administrative system once the boards are eliminated.

“We know that school board members are committed to that as well, even though despite the fact they disagree with this direction. It’s just about assisting with that, ensuring that there is no major policy decisions made during this time of transition.”

He says it will not affect the daily operations of schools or the education of students.

“I met with the board chairs the day before we made the announcement and they all committed to working with us to achieve that smooth transition because at the end of the day we are all in this for the kids.”

Last week Churchill announced he would dissolve the school boards, and replace them with a provincial advisory council.

It was one of 11 recommendations from Dr. Avis Glaze’s report.
