Vigil Honouring Victims Of Quebec Mosque Massacre Held In Yarmouth

A vigil was held last night in Yarmouth to mark the first anniversary of the Quebec mosque massacre.

Six men were murdered as they gathered to worship.

Two dozen people gathered at town hall as the names of the six victims were read aloud by Dr. Mustafa Al-Halide, a Yarmouth physician.

Children then placed lit candles in memory of each of the victims.

Dr. Khalidi, a Muslim, spoke about a personal experience he had just after the 9/11 attacks when he was a graduate medical student at Dalhousie University.

He said the head of the physiology department told him he was a member of the department and there was zero tolerance for any negative comments or actions towards him.

Dr. Khalidi told those gathered for the vigil that he became a Canadian citizen in 1995.

“But I don’t think I fully realized what that meant until that moment and I felt very grateful and very motivated to do the best I can to contribute to Canada in my professional and personal life.

Dr. Brian Moses also spoke, saying despite what is said from pulpits and microphones around the world, there are still intolerances found in the hearts and minds of some individuals.

Dr. Moses quoted the late Eleanor Roosevelt who said that universal human rights begins in small places, close to home.
